Update - Version 3 (+ Future Stuff!)

Here it is. Update 3. I've been mostly working on this update during Devtober, and there are a great amount of things to discuss.

New Levels

New content is always good

Many new levels have been introduced, and area 1 and 2 contain more than 15 levels. From holes in the level, to avoiding pits, there's some new puzzles to figure out.

Some new levels.

Tutorial Levels

Confusion sucks!

Additionally, there are some new tutorial levels to help ease players into new mechanics, like spikes and boxes.

Meet the Gravity Cores

Why are there spikes? Why is there sideways gravity?

Gravity cores have been added, and killing them unlocks certain mechanics, like spikes and sideways gravity. They have a unique look to them, and they even sing! You also need to solve a quick puzzle to get to most gravity cores.

Level Select

Save your progress and continue later

If you want to take a break, you can! Progress is now saved and can now be restored in the form of a level select. You can also see what is in each individual level, and there are also level names now!

New Playable Intro

No more compressed videos!

Instead of watching an intro, how about playing it instead? Well, you can now! The intro has been made longer, and there are now story elements at the beginning of it. There are some new platforms to help the player ease into the controls, and the intro is automatically skipped after playing through it once.

The player on a new piece of the intro, and the player moving around to show that, indeed, this is an interactive intro

Hardcore Mode Tweaks

(because it was just "one life mode")

  • Hardcore mode is now accessible through the level select, complete with a description about it
  • The player now holds an amulet
  • New, remixed music plays in hardcore mode
  • Tutorial monitors no longer work
    • They interrupt the flow of the remixed music
    • You're expected to know about the mechanics at this point/you completed the game once before trying out hardcore mode
  • Dying brings you to a different game over screen, complete with a 3D model, music, and no retry button(but you can still retry by clicking anywhere on the screen)
  • Quick restart doesn't work in hardcore mode(see QoL improvements)

Quality of Life Improvements

2x Scale

Do you feel like you can't see what's ahead of you? Well, you can now scale up the game view and make it easier to see things around you! If you want to have the original experience, you can. 2x scale also won't impact the level design process; all levels will be built with 1x scale in mind.

1x scale vs. 2x scale

Controller Support

There's controller support now, but it doesn't fare nicely with the UI, and it might not work for Playstation or Nintendo controllers.

Fonts

All text in the game is now handled by a font, rather than a sprite sheet. Instead of using multiple rich text tags to write text, all I have to do now is.... write text. This helps me make things like level names and long UI elements, and it allows me to add custom effects, like a shadow.

Other QoL Improvements/Bug Fixes

  • The player will rotate towards the direction of gravity, which makes things more smooth
  • The player can no longer jump in a 1-block wide gap/hallway, but can still jump if a box is on their head (added in Update 2, but wasn't enabled due to a previous bug)
  • Player debris actually moves now
  • A bug involving one-way gates was patched
  • The logo is now animated
  • The player in the title screen background now has an animation
  • Quick restart was added, which allows you to quickly restart with the press of a key (doesn't work in hardcore mode to prevent accidental deaths)
  • Level 12's(previous level 10) now has a minimap
  • Entrapment prevention was tweaked/removed entirely
  • A settings page was added to the pause menu, not just the main menu
  • Pausing and returning to the main menu during a tutorial("Tutorial Storage") was patched
  • Minimap movement was made more accurate
  • ALL music is now muted, not just area 1 and 2's music
  • Most, if not, all things are now affected by lighting
  • Buttons have one less pixel of collision to prevent "floating boxes" on buttons(as the button texture sinks by 1 pixel when it is activated)
  • Settings are now saved
  • Out of bounds areas are now signified by a red border
  • Tutorial monitors have been moved to different levels for tutorial purposes
    • Music now plays during a tutorial
  • Buttons now control their cables individually, so buttons don't have to rely on other buttons and their connected doors to show that they are activated
  • The purple stuff on the inverted gravity box now uses the gravity core's material
  • Music has been tweaked
  • Sounds have been added/tweaked
    • Intro sounds
    • Sounds for broken tutorial monitors
    • Reverb was added for the hardcore death sound
  • The game is in fullscreen now
  • The easter egg level button was put in a different place due to the new game over screen, but it's easier to get to(hint: it's in the level select screen after you enable hardcore mode)

Technical Stuff

  • There are some Unity Editor functions that help with generating level select data and unlocking all levels
  • The WebGL build seems to run faster
  • The game now uses Unity's new Input System, which provides more accessibility and better support for controllers
  • Updated to Unity version 2020.3.21(from 2020.3.15)
    • As a result, some packages were updated
  • .WAV loop points were added to some music(only two tracks, the intro music and tutorial music)
  • Rule tiles were added that make level development way faster and easier
  • A decor tilemap palette was added

Future Stuff

This is some stuff that is planned or already in the game, but unused

  • Area 3 levels
  • Conveyor belts
  • Area 3's music
  • Minigames
  • A boss fight
  • A special ending if you complete the game in hardcore mode
  • A level editor
  • A level browser & loader
  • Gravity goop that inverts gravity for you
  • Enemies
  • Themes and skins

There's many things that I probably forgot about, and there's also some things that I want to do, but simply don't have the time for. That's all for Update 3!
